I grow echinacea (coneflowers) and liatris very successfully in semi-shady and shady conditions. The liatris especially looks spectacular with the ferns in my shady garden.

It's true, I could grow some of the specific plants, and even copy some of the design elements (except for growing liatris - the deer absolutely love them - they nip the flowers right off the stem). However, what I really love about this garden is that it's in the middle of all the openness around it. That's something I couldn't achieve in my yard. Actually, I'm really just a frustrated prairie girl. I love wide open spaces and long views.
