Last year it was not deer that ate my tomatoes - it was rabbits! I got home from work one day last week and found this:
In the middle of the picture is a 1" stem - the remains - of a Yellow Pear tomato. Since I am sure that deer have not sneaked into the garden (the hostas are growing for the first time in 6 years), I believe that rabbits are the culprits.
I was about to send Spouse out with his .22 so I could make us a delicious hasenfeffer dinner. However, instead I did my best to protect everything until I knew I would have time to make more rabbit fences, which I finally did last Friday. The only things left un-fenced are watermelons, zucchini,
cucumbers and asparagus. The tomatoes and peppers in the self-watering
containers are not protected either - I just hope our little
cottontails can't/won't jump the 18" to get into them.
Aack...We have rabbits, too (see http://inadvertentgardener.wordpress.com/2006/05/30/rabbit-pie/ for the story from Iowa...), but so far they haven't been eating anything that I can tell. But I feel your pain...

Genie:
Hmmm - maybe Mr. MacGregor's rabbit pie would make a good dinner this week! I enjoyed your blog - I just hope the rabbits have stayed in the grass and out of the garden.
