Google "red harvest mite" and see if that's the bugs you were seeing?

Kim: Thanks for the idea. Just as I got your comment, my neighbor e-mailed me with a definitive ID - it's a red velvet mite. Much better than the red harvest mite, which is the adult form of the chigger.

Doesn't look *exactly* like the picture on the link. I don't remember ever seeing one of those. Funny, given how much playing in the woods we did as kids. It's a really beautiful bug.
